What is diffussion pump?

A diffusion pump is a type of vacuum pump used to create a high vacuum by allowing molecules to move from a high-pressure region to a low-pressure region through a series of stages.

In a diffusion pump, a high-speed jet of vapor is generated at the bottom of a pump, creating a partial vacuum by vaporizing a fluid such as silicone oil. The vapor then flows up through a series of baffles and nozzles, sweeping gas molecules along with it and ultimately exhausting them through a high-vacuum outlet.

Diffusion pumps are commonly used in applications where a high vacuum is required, such as in the semiconductor industry, thin film deposition, and space simulation chambers. They are capable of achieving pressures as low as 10^-9 mbar.

One of the key advantages of diffusion pumps is their ability to pump continuously without the need for moving parts, which reduces the risk of contamination and maintenance requirements. However, they can be quite noisy and require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
